"...Preservation of our rich cultural heritage and eventually the cultural integration of our Nation, Malaysia.”

Y.B. Datuk Celestine Ujang Jilan

  • Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri for Sarawak (Speaker of the State Assembly for Sarawak. Year 1986)

“Art plays an important role in the evolution of the human society and practised since time immemorial. Although Art is a presentation in any given media or form but its revelation is fascinating and wonderful. It records events and social development of all ages and thus part of our cultural heritage. This had been demonstrated in the drawings in many caves right through the stone age to the modern days. Thus the saying “A picture is worth thousand words” echoed into the infinite future.

More important, Art involves not only a preoccupation of the minds more so the creative activities that come with it. The encouragement and channelling of this nature of creativity in Art to other fields of human activities, may provide vital elements that could weather any storm be it economic, social or political. In this way, we have replaced emptiness with fulfilment like the fulfilment of a so-called “empty room” with drawings, blending or fusion of colours and artistic placement of the resources.

It is hoped that through the Art Exhibition of this kind (Chew Fang Chin Art Exhibition), it could generate interest, appreciation and value in Art among the society, in particular the younger generation. The attainment will go a long way towards the preservation of our rich cultural heritage and eventually the cultural integration of our Nation, Malaysia.”
